University of Winchester

The McCain range has helped Dave Morton, University of Winchester Catering Operations Manager, launch a successful Gourmet Burger restaurant, increasing customer footfall by 80% on the previous year and growing average spend by more than 30%, while also reducing waste.

Problem:
The Games Room outlet in the Student Union Bar hadn’t delivered on sales, despite the trial of a number of different catering formats. A new concept that tapped into student demand for the latest high street trends was required. The menu also needed to revolve around the University’s commitment to provenance, as well as ethical and local products.

Solution:
To serve gourmet burgers complimented by a range of premium potato products that were differentiated from those served in the other University outlets, and could also be offered as upgrades to increase average spend. McCain Skin on Fries, Hash Browns, and Jackets, are all now on the menu, with Sweet Potato Fries and Southern Fried Wedges offered as upgrades.

Results:
The Gourmet Burger offer, complimented by the McCain range, is now a firm favourite with students at the University of Winchester, with the quality of the products and rebrand driving an 80% increase in customer footfall on the previous year. Average spend has risen by more than 30%, with the ability to upgrade to Sweet Potato Fries or Southern Fried Wedges, giving their customers more flexibility and encouraging incremental sales. Potato product wastage has also been reduced as the products hold better than before and McCain Jackets can be cooked to order, avoiding the need to predict demand and prepare jacket potatoes in advance.
