OPM Competition 2016 Overview

The McCain Simply One Pot Meal Competition 2016 shone a spotlight on the creativity, talent and hard work of school cooks around the UK in an exciting “MasterChef style” cook off at the luxurious Eckington Manor in Worchester.

The competition brief was simple; create an innovative, balanced and child-friendly one pot dish using any product from the McCain Simply Range.

The competition was fierce as each of the five finalists created their dish from scratch, in front of a panel of industry experts, including former LACA Chair and former Head of Catering and Schools Facilities Services for Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Anne Bull and McCain Development Chef for education, Adele Procter. But it was Beverley Paterson from Scottish Borders who came out on top for the second year in a row with her Simply Mash Gnocchi, ‘Bac and Cheese’, a nutritional twist on traditional mac and cheese and a firm favourite amongst her students.

Beverley, who includes one pot recipes in her weekly meal plan to add great tasting variety and help deliver quick, healthy and popular one pot dishes, explains, “One pot meals are a must have for all school cooks. The McCain Simply Range is especially great in one pot cooking because each product helps to deliver delicious flavour combinations, making it quicker and easier to serve lunch to our students.”

All of the finalists received a complimentary dinner and overnight stay at the luxury Eckington Manor hotel and had their recipes published on the McCain Foodservice website. As the McCain Chef Solutions Simply One Pot Meal Champion 2016, Beverley received an all-expenses paid culinary trip for two to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage HQ and appeared at LACA as a guest of McCain to showcase her winning dish.

Beverley continues, “I would urge every school cook to enter the McCain Simply One Pot Meal competition. I have entered lots of competitions and this one definitely takes the lead. Even if you don’t win, the experience of competing is a prize in itself.”
