On Wednesday 22nd February McCain sponsored the National Burger Awards 2017, the competition that gives some of the best burger chefs in country the chance to showcase their abilities.
Ahead of the competition, Catherine Rigg, McCain Foods Senior Product Manager, said: “Burger and chips is a menu must-have, and a casual dining marriage made in heaven. We’re very excited to celebrate the very best burgers available by being part of the 2017 National Burger Awards. What are we expecting from this year’s awards? Passion, expertise and innovation, and some unbelievable burgers!”
After hundreds of submissions and with a total of four awards up for grabs, 16 finalists made it through to compete across the three rounds of the competition.
First, chefs were asked to cook up their own creations in the Signature Round, using ingredients of their choice. Signature Burgers were assessed on 6 main factors, with judges firstly looking at the preparation, cooking, and assembly techniques, and will also of course take into account the flavour profile, texture, composition and presentation of the finished product. Although the competition was tough with some mouth-watering creations on display, LOCKHOUSE won the Signature Burger round with their Locked & Loaded Burger.
Next came the Technical Round, with competitors showcasing their skills using a selection of ingredients supplied by sponsors, which included McCain’s Staycrisp Fries. In this round competitors were judged on their creativity with the ingredients supplied to them, the originality of their cooking method, and any added flair or personal touches shown in creating their burger. Ivo Pinto of THE LOWRY HOTEL scooped up the award, showcasing the most technical proficiency with the ingredients provided.
In the third round, competitors were thrown a curve ball by the Mystery Box, with each chef improvising a burger from a selection of mystery ingredients! This really put the chefs to the test, having to think on their feet and come up with a recipe on the spot, and at the end of the judging London based BBQ restaurant Meat and Shake walked away with the award; take a look at their Signature Burger entry “Meat Me in Texas” below.
Finally, all 16 chefs were judged on their performance across the competition, taking into account the technique they displayed and the quality of end product they created in each round. At the end of the judging, Glenn Evan’s of LAS IGUANAS was announced Overall Winner of the National Burger Awards 2017, taking home a prize of £1000. The judges loved Glenn’s Buenos Aires Burger, an Argentine inspired creation served with Provaleta cheese, grilled smoky chorizo, caramelised onions, chimichurri and aioli.
All in all the event was a success in highlighting the talents of the UK’s top burger chefs, and McCain were delighted to be able to sponsor and provide our Staycrisp Fries on the day.
